Goals for the week:
To review all short vowel sounds.
To continue to work with addition and subtraction facts.
To solve a problem using strategies.
To make quilt patterns by using shapes.
To repeat a quilt pattern to make a quilt.
To make a scarecrow glyph to learn more about our class.
To read and write words using short vowels a, i, and o.
To identify word endings.
To identify details in a story.
To retell a story.
To identify story elements.(character, setting, plot, main idea)
To read and write words including  diagraphs “the h brothers”  ch, wh, th, sh.
New word study words this week:   to review unit 11a  and work on 11b  that, thing, with, this, dish, thank.
Word study words to know: am, at, cat, sat, bat, fat, as, has, can, an, man, had, van, sad, to, bad, rag, in big, is, did, if, it, his pack, sick, tack, back, kid, cab, sack, pack, its, him quit, six, fix, wax, on, got, not,  off, will, miss, you , fizz, pass, long, ring, pink, what, bank, sang, was, inch, whip, are, put, whiff, chill.

To learn more about Native American an Pilgrims.
To continue to learn about insects and life cycles.


Homework :
Monday night: Complete an activity on your READO board
Tuesday: Study math facts +/-1, +/-2
Wednesday night: Complete the next writing prompt in your 100 things about me book (Book Fair today)
Thursday:  Study word study words using your spelling menu .

 Request and Reminders:
Lunch money MUST be in an envelope marked with a name and room number.  Paying online is the easiest for first grade if that is possible.
* Scholastic orders are available online, books make great gifts!  Conferences  November 25,26,27.  We have half days 11/25, 11/26, no school 11/27.
There will not be a newsletter next week due to short days and conferences.   You should continue working on your READO and Math facts.  Study all units of Word study words from 1-11b

We have a new helper in first grade.  Miss A comes to our room to help out on some days!

Goals for the week:
To review all short vowel sounds.
To continue to work with addition facts and tables.
To introduce our new math unit we will be studying shapes.
To read and write words in the – it, -ig,- ack,- ick, word family.
To read and write words that have qu, x and y.
To have compare and contrast the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly and the Old Lady who swallowed a Bat.
To read Halloween stories, the Big Pumpkin, the old lady who wasn’t afraid of anything.
To read our Book of the week:  One Stormy Night.
To continue to listen to stories about bats and bugs.
To compare  and contrast bats and birds.
To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.
To identify cause and effect in a story.
To identify sequence in a story.
To retell a story.
To identify story elements.(character, setting, plot, main idea)

To learn more about the characteristics of insects.
To continue to observe and compare the life cycles of our mealworms, waxworms and butterflies.
To review all short vowel sounds.
To continue to work with addition facts.
To begin our study of Geometry.
To read and write words in the – it, in, ig, word family.
To read and write words with short a and short i.
To know that c is followed by a and k is followed by i.
To use –ck at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.
To read and write words with  short o.
To read and discuss Pumpkin, Pumpkin
To write a fall poem.
To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.
New word study words this week: unit 8 on, got, not, was, box and job.
Word study words to know: am, at, cat, sat, bat, fat, as, has, can, an, man. had, van, sad, to, bad, rag, in, big, is, did, if , it his, pack said, sick, tack.

To learn about the growth of a pumpkin.
To make a shape pumpkin and graph.
To begin a new unit in our math investigations.
To compare and name 2 dimensional shapes.
To enjoy a PTO sponsored  assembly.

Homework :
Monday night: Please choose an activity on your READO board.
Tuesday:  Study math facts +1, +2, and -1,-2.  Math worksheet with math problem solving(subtraction)
Wednesday night: West Chester Halloween Parade (no homework)
Thursday :  Study word study words using spelling menu and complete project read worksheet to review past units.

* I have incorporated some worksheets with the homework so that you can see what your child should be able to complete independently.  Please return the day after they are sent.  If that is not possible send a later day.  I always tell the children what they should be doing for homework, Hopefully they can tell you in addition to it being posted on the blog.
 Request and Reminders
Word study words unit 1-7 should be review for your child from kindergarten.   They should be automatic.  We are beginning unit 8 today.  If you want a copy of all units you can find one on my website under files and documents
