Goals for the week:

To review all short vowel sounds.

To continue to work with addition facts and tables.

To continue our new math unit we will be studying shapes and fractions.

To read and write words in the – it, -ig,- ack,- ick, word family.

To read and write words that have qu, x and y.

To have compare and contrast the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly and the Old Lady who swallowed a Bat.

To read Halloween stories, the Big Pumpkin, the old lady who wasn’t afraid of anything, One Stormy Night.

To compare and contrast characters across stories.

To read fiction and nonfiction selections on the topic of Bats.

To identify fiction and nonfiction stories.

To continue to identify and write facts and opinions.

To compare and contrast bats and birds.

To continue to listen to stories about bats and bugs.

To compare  and contrast bats and birds.

To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.

To identify cause and effect in a story.

To identify sequence in a story.

To retell a story.

To identify story elements.(character, setting, plot, main idea)

To know that f, l, s and z are doubled at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.

To read and write words that end in glide sounds ng, nk.

Thursday : study word study words to unit 10 (no assessment due to excitement of Halloween)

Friday:  Harvest Party today  (just children and volunteers please)

To learn more about the characteristics of insects.

To continue to observe and compare the life cycles of our mealworms, wax worms and butterflies.

To review all short vowel sounds.

To continue to work with addition facts.

To begin our study of Geometry.

To read and write words in the – it, in, ig, word family.

To read and write words with short a and short i.

To know that c is followed by a and k is followed by i.

To use –ck at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.

To read and write words with  short o.

To know that s,l,z, and f are doubled at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.

Word Study words this week:  Off, will, miss, you, fizz, pass, jazz, Hill, fill, quill, fizz.

To read and discuss Pumpkin, Pumpkin, It’s Pumpkin Time, and From Seed to Pumpkin.

To identify story elements while reading and retelling stories.

To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.

To identify facts and opinions.

To write about pumpkins, giving facts in sequential order.

To learn about the growth of a pumpkin and to put the stages of growth into order.

To begin a new unit in our math investigations.

To compare and name 2 dimensional shapes.

To manipulate 2 d shapes to fill in shape puzzles.

 

Homework :

Monday night: Please choose an activity on your READO board.

Tuesday:  Study math facts +1, +2, and -1,-2.  Math worksheet with math problem solving

Wednesday night: West Chester Halloween Parade (no homework)

Thursday :  Study word study words using spelling menu and complete project read worksheet to review past units.

Word study words unit 1-7 should be review for your child from kindergarten.   They should be automatic.  We are beginning unit 9 today.  If you want a copy of all units you can find one on my website under files and documents

To use problem solving steps to solve addition problems.

To become more familiar with a calendar.

To read a In a Dark, Dark, Wood.

To review sounds and write magic c letters.

To listen to The Itsy Bitsy Spider and The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.

New word study words this week: unit 8 on, got, not, was, box and job.

To identify the elements of a narrative/fiction story.  Characters, setting, problem, solution.

To celebrate Columbus Day and to learn about Christopher Columbus.

To learn about N,S,E, and W on a compass rose.

To learn more about the life cycles of mealworms and wax worms.

Monday night: Complete a square on the READO card.

Tuesday night: practice Math facts,

Wednesday night: Complete the next page in your 100 things about me.  Please be sure to include a complete topic sentence and 1 or 2 detail sentences.

Thursday : study word study words using your spelling menu

To continue to work with greater than and less than.

To apply our adding strategies to addition story problems.

To become familiar with different combinations of the same number.

To practice writing sentences using a subject and a predicate.

To use upper and lower case letters in our sentences as well as punctuation.
