Goals for the week:
To review all short vowel sounds.
To continue to work with shapes.
To continue to add.
To identify more and fewer.
To identify odd and even.
To study words with short o.
To know that s,f, and l will be doubled at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.
To study nk and ng at the end of words.
To review sounds and write lowercase c, a, o, g, d,
To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.
To identify cause and effect in a story.
To identify sequence in a story.
To retell a story.
To identify story elements.(character, setting, plot, main idea)
New word study words this week: Unit 10 Long, ring, pink, what, bank, sang.
Word study words to know: am, at, cat, sat, bat, fat, as, has, can, an, man, had, van, sad, to, bad, rag, big, is, did, if, it, his pack , sick, tack, back, kid, cab, sack, pack, its, him, quit, six, fix, wax, on got, not, was, box, job. off, will, miss, you, fizz, pass.
Red words to know: the, to, have, said, of, was.
To continue to use capital letters and punctuation in sentences.
To listen and respond to My River.
To listen to our Book of the Week:  A Beaver Tale.
To learn more about rivers.
To learn more about beavers.
To record and observe all our insects.
To learn more about the writing process from real authors on Writer’s Day!!
To learn more about Election Day .

Homework :
Monday night: Complete a Reado activity
Tuesday:  No School for Election day!!
Wednesday:  Complete the next prompt in your 100 things about me book

Look for Thanksgiving Homework to come home this week!!  Please send back any day next week.

Request and Reminders:  You can return reading logs at any time when they are completed.  I will send a pizza slip and a new reading log for you.  You may also send for a new reado if needed at any time. 
We have a new helper in first grade.  Miss A comes to our room to help out on some days!

Goals for the week:
To review all short vowel sounds.
To continue to work with addition facts and tables.
To introduce our new math unit we will be studying shapes.
To read and write words in the – it, -ig,- ack,- ick, word family.
To read and write words that have qu, x and y.
To have compare and contrast the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly and the Old Lady who swallowed a Bat.
To read Halloween stories, the Big Pumpkin, the old lady who wasn’t afraid of anything.
To read our Book of the week:  One Stormy Night.
To continue to listen to stories about bats and bugs.
To compare  and contrast bats and birds.
To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.
To identify cause and effect in a story.
To identify sequence in a story.
To retell a story.
To identify story elements.(character, setting, plot, main idea)
Last weeks word study words : on, got, not, was, box, job.
To know that f, l, s and z are doubled at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.
New word study words:  Off, will, miss, fizz, pass, jazz,  and the red word you.

To learn more about the characteristics of insects.
To continue to observe and compare the life cycles of our mealworms, waxworms and butterflies.
To review all short vowel sounds.
To continue to work with addition facts.
To begin our study of Geometry.
To read and write words in the – it, in, ig, word family.
To read and write words with short a and short i.
To know that c is followed by a and k is followed by i.
To use –ck at the end of a short vowel one syllable word.
To read and write words with  short o.
To read and discuss Pumpkin, Pumpkin
To write a fall poem.
To identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.
New word study words this week: unit 8 on, got, not, was, box and job.
Word study words to know: am, at, cat, sat, bat, fat, as, has, can, an, man. had, van, sad, to, bad, rag, in, big, is, did, if , it his, pack said, sick, tack.
Red words to know:  to, the, have, said, of
To learn about the growth of a pumpkin.
To make a shape pumpkin and graph.
To begin a new unit in our math investigations.
To compare and name 2 dimensional shapes.
To enjoy a PTO sponsored  assembly.

Homework :
Monday night: Please choose an activity on your READO board.
Tuesday:  Study math facts +1, +2, and -1,-2.  Math worksheet with math problem solving(subtraction)
Wednesday night: West Chester Halloween Parade (no homework)
Thursday :  Study word study words using spelling menu and complete project read worksheet to review past units.

* I have incorporated some worksheets with the homework so that you can see what your child should be able to complete independently.  Please return the day after they are sent.  If that is not possible send a later day.  I always tell the children what they should be doing for homework, Hopefully they can tell you in addition to it being posted on the blog.
 Request and Reminders
Word study words unit 1-7 should be review for your child from kindergarten.   They should be automatic.  We are beginning unit 8 today.  If you want a copy of all units you can find one on my website under files and documents

To solve a problem where the total number and one part are known.
To use problem solving steps to solve addition problems.
To become more familiar with a calendar.
To read a In a Dark, Dark, Wood.
To review sounds and write magic c letters.
To listen to The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
To know that /k/ at the end of a short vowel one syllable word is –ck
To review the sounds of (x, qu, z, y)
New word study words this week:  its, him, quit, six, fix, wax, yam
Word study words to know: am, at, cat, sat, bat, fat, as , has, can, the, an, man, sad, had, van, rag, bad, to, in, big, is, have, did, I, it his, pack, said, sick, and tack, back, kid, cab, of, sack, and pack.
To write our own version of the itsy bitsy spider.
To learn more about spiders.
To continue to learn about Christopher Columbus.
To learn about N,S,E, and W on a compass rose.
To continue to observe our caterpillars as they change.
To  learn more about the life cycles of mealworms and wax worms.

Monday night: Complete a square on the READO card.  Complete Fire Safety Homework.
Tuesday night: practice Math facts, complete math story problems sent home today.
Wednesday night: Complete the next page in your 100 things about me.  Please be sure to include a complete topic sentence and 1 or 2 detail sentences.
Thursday : study word study words using your spelling menu and complete project read homework sheet sent home today
Friday:  11:40 Dismissal today.  Be sure to write a note if there is a change in your dismissal.

We are in need of 4 inch Styrofoam balls if you are near a craft store and would like to donate any.
We could also use alphabet stamps, small alphabet beads, pipe cleaners, wikki sticks if you would like  to donate to our class center activities.
